Come back to Ohio

結局、24日の20時の便のキャンセル待ちに当選し（←20人くらい待ってたので、本当にそんな感じだった）、ちょうど25日に差し掛かる時間にオハイオに戻ってきました。戻ってきた日の夜は本当に寒くて、泣きそうだったけれど、昨日は春のような心地よい気候だった。今はひろこちゃん、Amenda、Jamieのところにお世話になっているけれど、昨日アパートを見つけたので1日に引越し予定。住む場所を変えることで、何かが物理的にできなくなると、自分にとって好きなこと、別に暮らしになくてもいいことが見えてきたりする。例えば、バンコクのアパートにはキッチンがなかったので、今、料理できることが嬉しい。まあ、バンコクは自炊しない方が安上がりだったっていうのがあるんだけれど。バンコクで楽しかったのはアクセスがいいので、買い物に行けたり、美術館に行ったり、そういう都会の生活ができたのがよかった。

元々、荷物は多い方ではないけれどオハイオに置いてあった荷物は段ボール6箱はある。ちょっと多い。トランク一つで、どこでもいけるような身軽な人生がよいなと思うので、掃除したい。昨晩から本当に風が強くて、家が吹き飛ばされるんじゃないかと思う位の外出日和ではない今日は掃除のいい機会。タイに行ったおかげで、ちょっとつまんないなあと思ってた田舎オハイオの生活が今、新鮮なのだ。泣いても笑ってもあと5か月。ここの生活を笑って過ごしたいなと思う。帰りの飛行機で観た映画「ハンサム☆スーツ」のように。あれ、めっちゃおもろかった！

 

I was on the waiting list for a flight to Toledo until 8 p.m. on Dec 24, finally I got the seat and came back to Ohio on Dec 25 round midnight. I could not stand the weather as it was so cold on that day, but it was very warm yesterday. I stayed at my friends' house, but I will move in another apartment which I found yesterday on Jan 1. I miss cooking since there was no kitchen at my apartment in Bangkok. Eating out was more reasonable than cooking there. The opportunity made me realize that I like cooking. On the other hand, I really enjoyed shopping and visiting art museums in city life.

I don't have a lot of belongings, however, there are 6 boxes for my stuff. I have to sort necessary items from them as I want to be flexible at any time and place. Today is the best day to do that at home since it has been windy last night. I did not stay in Ohio for a while, so everything is fresh for me even though here is the countryside. I'm ready to enjoy the life here with a smile until May. I wathed the movie "Handsome suit" on a plane, which reminded me of a happy smile!

 

X'mas eve at Chicago airport

シカゴに着いたはいいけれど、トレド行きのフライトがキャンセルです。ガーン。タイを発ってから丸１日が経過。早くシャワーを浴びて、ゆっくり寝たいよー。今日の16時のフライトのキャンセル待って、それがダメだったら明日の朝の10時半の便まで空港で待たなくちゃいけないらしい。（涙）こればっかりはどうしようもないね。

I arrived at Chicago airport safely, however, I'm stuck here due to a cancellation of my flight to Toledo. 24 hours has passed already, so I would like to take a shower and go to bed. If a seat is available for a next flight at 4.00 p.m. today, I can come back. If not, I have to stay here until tomorrow morning.

5か月間のタイのインターンを終え、今オハイオに向かうべくトランジットで成田に待機中です。本当はインターンは22日までだったんだけど、愛すべきボスが22日に休暇から帰ってこれなくなったので23日も出勤。ちょこっと顔だすつもりが、何故か夕方5時までみっちり働くはめに。最終日って忙しいのよね。仕事だけじゃなく、「もう帰るの～？」っていろんな人に話しかけてもらったりするとあっという間に時間が過ぎていきました。

昨日のお昼もお別れ会ってことで素敵なレストランに連れていってもらいました。HRのみなさんには本当に可愛がってもらったので、ポロリと泣いてしまった。みんなのサポートがなければ本当にここまでやってこれなかったと思うから有難かったなあという嬉し涙です。

インターンだけじゃなく、東南アジア青年の船の繋がりで思った以上にタイではたくさんの出会いがあったので、その分離れるのが寂しかったけれど、せっかく出会えた縁なので途切れないよう大切にしていきたい。オハイオはマイナス20度とのこと。ひょー。「温かくして戻ってきてね！」というメッセージをたくさんもらったのでコートは持ってるけれど耐えられるんかな？？なんせタイでは半そでだったからね。

 

I completed my internship programme at the United Nations in Thailand since August. Now I'm waiting for a flight for Ohio at the Narita airport. My last working day was supposed to be 22nd, however, I worked on 23th to see my supervisor as he could not come back on 22nd. I was exhausted last day since I had to hand over everything and say good bye to everyone.

 

A farewell party was held  at a nice restaurant near the river for me by the HR colleagues yesterday. My supervisors and colleagues were awesome, so I was moved to tears there lastly.

 

I met more a lot of people in Thailand through the internship programme and the ship for Sourth East Asia programme than I expected. It was hard to say good bye to my friends whom I met, but I want to keep in touch with them. I heard from my friends that it is minus 20 degree in Ohio! I hope I can survive the cold weather because a T-shirts was enough to spend the time in Thailand.  

Thai flight information

タイで空港閉鎖。普通にインターンだけの生活であれば、問題のなかった私。先週からおとんとおかんが来てました。もちろん、帰れてません・・。（泣）昨日の夜中の24時に明日、タイ航空が臨時便の手配をする模様と旅行会社から連絡をもらう。旅行会社がいうには早いもの順じゃないというが、夜中家族会議を開き、一か八かカウンターが開くのは13時だというが朝5時に起きて列に並ぶことを決意する。

我が家は4番目。もし、早いもの順であれば乗れる位置に待機。時間が経つに連れ、すごい長い列が出来上がる。そのうち、おかしな輩も続々と現れる。「私は病気だからこの場所で待ってれるわ。」朝4時、5時起きで待ってる最前列の私たちには連帯感がすでに生まれており、「そんなの関係ない。待ってるのはみんな一緒。」「うちだって90歳のおじいちゃんがいるんだ。ちゃんと列に並びなさい。」とみんなでもう反撃。するとまた別の怪しいのが現われ「この人はとっても偉い神父さんなんだ。一番前に入れてあげてくれ。」これにもみんなで「ダメだーーーーー。」と反論。

わたしがびっくりしたのは日本人でも声をあげて「No」という人がたくさんいたこと。予想通りタイ航空は列を公平に整列することはなかったんだけど、予想に反して日本人のみんなはちゃんと列の公平性を保とうとおかしな人にはおかしいとみんながみんな声をあげてたことが気持ちよかった。

並ぶこと7時間、ようやくカウンターが空き、中に入ると11月25日の搭乗券をもってる人から優先的に臨時便の手配をするということ、29日以降の搭乗券を持ってる人は今日は手続きができないというアナウンスがあった。最前線で並んでた家族はほとんどが29日以降。だったら列を作っている最中にこういうアナウンスがあれば、無駄に待つ必要はなかったんだけれど。もちろん、こういうリスクは承知の上で我が家も列に並んだので文句は言わないけれど。早く、空港使用の再開を望まずにはいられない。

Von Voyage!

結局、今週末は「東南アジア青年の船」、一色に。なぜならバンコクに今年の船が到着したので。わたしが参加してから、早くも4年。みんなそれぞれ大人になってといえば聞こえがいいけれど、みんなやはり少しずつおじさん、おばさんの階段を上ってるんだよね。（笑）久し振りに会っても気を使わず、ざっくばらんに話ができる心地よい関係で楽しかった！ちなみにあたし、日本人には見えないようでパーティー会場、リユニオン、どこに行っても国籍を聞かれました。

船の出港のときは見送られる側でも見送る側でもいつも感動する。私たちの人生も旅を続けてるんだっていうのと船が大海原に向かっていくのが壮大なスケールの絵として重なるので。人生は続く・・・。

 

I joined a reunion party and a send off ceremony for the Ship for Southeast Asian Youth Program this weekend. Time flies fast, four years has passed since I participated it. I felt our batch mates grew up, on the other hands, they were getting older than before. I was very happy to have a good time with my old friends on the ship. To my surprise, I did not look like Japanese, so I had many questions "Where are you from?". 

Sights of departures always make me impressive as I feel it can represent our journey of life dynamically. Life is a voyage!   

Positioning

親しくさせてもらっていた日本人の先輩の異動が決まったため、今晩Farewell Partyにお呼ばれ。参加者はHRの部署のトップをはじめ、上司をはじめ先輩の方々でペーペーは私一人だったので、ちょっと疲れやした。なぜなら、立ち位置に困ったので。あまり先輩方に慣れ慣れしくするのもなんだし、かといってホームパーティーなのにかしこまりすぎてもなんだし、無い頭をいろいろひねりつつ、いろんなところに首を突っ込み、少しでも心地よくいれる場所を探して回る3時間でした。でも、後半はワインが回ってきてたので、そんなに気にする必要がなくってよかった。なにより、一緒にごはんを食べるとコミュニケーションが取りやすくなるし、また新しい人と知り合えるし、こういう場に声をかけてくれる人がいるってのが有難い。

My Japanese superior will move to New york in December, a farewell party was held at my direct supervisor's house. Most of the participants were my seniors, e.g. a head of our division, so I was nervous a little without any friends. I was wondering how to communicate with them. I thought a balance was important, it meant I should neither be very friendly nor formally towards them. I looked for a comfortable place at the beginning, but I did not have to care about my positioning as they drank wines gradually. Above all, I was so happy to have dinner together and make more friends there! I really appreciate my colleagues who invited me.

 

 

 

 

 

Mystery Tour

「金曜日、親戚と郊外の牧場に行くからお休み取りなよ？！」と職場の先輩に誘ってもらい金曜から親戚ツアーに参加。まず、びっくりだったのが牧場見学は予約が必要で、牧場には行けないってことがすべて準備が整い、車に乗り始めてからわかったこと。（笑）これこそ、タイ文化、「サバイ、サバイ～」。上司とも幸いフランクな関係を築けてるので「金曜日、牧場に連れてってくれるっていってるんでお休みさせてください。」と言った手前、月曜日、聞かれたときのリアクションを考え中・・。

オーガニックの食材を使った素敵なレストランで昼食のときのこと、先輩の叔母さんの行動にまた、軽く驚き。強い仏教信仰家であることは車の中でもお経を唱えてたし、感じていたんだけどレストランでお坊さんの集団を見かけたときに確信に。彼らの昼食代を支払うと申し出てたので。そうすることで幸せを信じてるようだけど車の中で叔父さんが「あんないっぱいのお坊さんにあれは払い過ぎだろー」と夫婦のありがちな口論になってました。（笑）

でもでも、最大に驚いたのは一軒家に着いたときのこと。なんだかみんな、荷物をおろしてるし、ここから移動しなそうな気配だったので「叔父さんはここに泊まるんですか？？」と聞いたら「いやいや、私たちがここに泊まるんだよ。」って。えーーーーーー、聞いてないよーって感じ。いくら英語がやばいあたしとはいえ、さすがに郊外に宿泊するなんて話は聞いてない。確かに先輩の家を出るときにみんな、荷物多いなーとは思ってたし、「なんでそんなに荷物少ないの？」と聞かれたけど。あたしはいろいろ回ったあとに先輩の家に泊まると思ってすべて、彼女の家に置いてきたのでした。でも、いろいろサバイバル体験をさせてもらったおかげで一瞬、動揺したけどお湯の出るシャワーは使えるし、掛け布団もあったのでぐっすり就寝。今日はプミポン国王のお姉さまの葬儀が行われてるので町中が喪に服していて、みんな黒色の服を。着替えのないあたしは、「これを着なさい。」と黒色の服を貸してもらう。なんかこういう気遣いは同じアジアの匂いを感じます。

今日のお昼はそのまま先輩と職場の同僚の結婚パーティーへ。こうやって旅行に誘ってもらったり、結婚パーティーに呼んでもらったり、この部署のメンバーとの相性が本当によくってラッキーだったと思う。上司もそつなくなんでも仕事をスムーズにこなして、かっこいいんだ。大して歳は違わないけれど仕事に対する前向きな姿勢や同僚とのコミュニケーションの取り方とか、敵わないなあと憧れつつ、いつかは追いついてみたいなと思うのでありました。

My colleague asked me "Could you take a leave on Friday? I will go to a farm with my relatives." I decided to join the tour, but I realized that we could not go to the farm as an advance reservation was required when I was on a car with her family. I think it's a kind of Thai culture, "Sabai, Sabai." Fortunately I have a good relationship with my supervisor, so I asked him "May I take a leave as I'm invited to a farm tour?" Now I regret to tell the truth since I'm afraid of his question about the farm on Monday.... Hahaha.

When we had lunch at a beautiful organic restaurant, I was surprised at a behavior of her aunt. She treated all of monks there. I was wondering if she was a Buddhist as she chanted a Buddhist sutra on the car. I realized she was a strong Buddhist believer to see her way toward them. Her husband complained about her kindness " It was too much to treat all of them." I think it's natural between a couple.  

I was surprised at another fact when we arrived at a house. Everybody tried to take their bags from the car and seemed to stay there. I asked the uncle " Will you stay here tonight??" He told me "We will stay here." I questioned "Weeeeeee????" Even though my English is poor, I did not catch such kind of information. Indeed I saw their belongings were a lot, we had a conversation "Your bag is so small." I expected we would go back to her house after the tour, so I did not bring anything. But I had good sleep without my belongings as my experiences made me be tougher. A funeral of a king's sister was held today, so black attire was appropriate to mourn for her. Her mother gave me her black sweater. I felt that Japanese and Thai were close from her behavior.  

I attended a wedding party with her for our colleague this afternoon. I was so happy to meet them through my internship and be invited for the trip and the wedding. My supervisor is also so sweet as her leadership and communication skills are awesome. It was lucky for me that I could meet the great role model like her here as well!

Lovely HR

インターン、10月に入ってから人事セクションで働かせてもらってます。採用にも関わらせてもらって国連のネームバリューのすごさを体感。毎日、毎日、すごい量の応募書類をさばくのに1日が暮れていきます。でも、いろんな応募者がいるのにもびっくり。書類を送って来ないで「自分は適任なのでGoogleで名前を調べてみてください。」とか頼んでいないいろんなファイルを山のようにメールに添付してきて、肝心の要求されている応募フォーマットがついてなかったり。突っ込みどころ満載。

直接の上司じゃないけど、後ろの席の中華系C先輩の天然ボケキャラがツボにハマってる今日この頃。イスラエル人のE上司が話したいときにC先輩が席におらず「おしおきだー」と言ってC先輩の部屋のドアにセロテープを張って、待ち構えてたところC先輩はなぜかセロテープが見えず、セロテープと顔面が正面衝突。上司のEは部屋に入る前に「なんやねん、これ？？」ってリアクションを期待してたのに期待はずれの結果でC先輩から「こんなのは面白くもなんともないから、こんなことは二度としないように！！！」ときつくお叱りを受けるはめに。E上司はC先輩がいなくなったときに「間違えた、あいつはこんなに背が低かったのか・・これは俺の肩の高さなんだけど・・」と笑いを取れないことを悔やむ様子。

あと、こないだC先輩が電話をかけていて部屋から漏れ聞こえてきた会話。「もしもし、あつこさんはいらっしゃいますか？」「もしもし、聞こえてますか？」「もしもしー、あつこさんはいらっしゃいますか？」「もしもしーもしもしー、あつこさんはいらっしゃいますか？」と100回は繰り返したでしょうか？（笑）あまりに真剣にあつこさんを探してる様子だったので上司E、先輩と私は突っ込まずずっと息をこらして様子を見守っていたけれど、上司Eが「どうなっとんねん！」としびれを切らして一言、発したのを機に私たちは大爆笑のうずに・・。

週末はC先輩たちとマッサージに行ったり、お好み焼きを食べに行ったり、一緒に過ごしたところ、またC先輩のボケに遭遇。タイのタクシードライバーはほとんど英語が話せないのでタイ語が必要になる場面。C先輩は普段はタイ語を話さないんだけど、タクシーの中でドライバーに堂々と発したタイ語の一言「トンバイ（まっすぐ行って）」がなんと違う方向でした。（笑）

そんなこんなで、ここに書くといまいち笑の臨場感が伝わらないけれど愉快な先輩たちと楽しく仕事させてもらってます。

 

I have enjoyed to work at the Human Resource Section since October. I'm in charge of recruitment, I realized that vacancy positions at the United Nations are so attractive by checking number of increasing application forms everyday. To my surprise, there were various applicants. One applicant emailed to us that I'm qualified candidate, so please check my name through Google. Another applicant attached many files which are not required, but she forgot to send an application form which are required....

My senior colleague (C) cracked me up lot!  When my supervisor (E) really wanted to talk with C, but he was not at his room at that time. E said "C should be punished as he is not here now" and stretched a tape for his door for a laugh. To our surprise, the tape hit his eyes since C could not see the tape. C said to E seriously "Don't do that again!! It's not a fun!!!!" E regretted the wrong height because he did not expect C was so small.

One day we heared C's telephone conversation from his room. "Hello, can I talk to Atsuko?" "Hello, can you hear me? can I talk to Atsuko?" "Hello, Helloooooo, can I talk to Atsuko?" He asked 100 times seriously...Even though we heared his conversation and thought it was so funny, we tried not to laugh at the situation. Finally my supervisor E said to him "Hey, what are you doing??????!" We burst into laughter! 

I hang out with my senior colleagues including C, went to a massage and had Japanese pan cake. I faced his natural personality weekend as well! Taxi drivers cannot speak English normally in Thailand, so our foreigner need to speak Thai when we take a taxi at least. C does not speak Thai usually, but he spoke one Thai word "Trong-pai (Go straight)" in a confident voice, but fortunately it was a wrong direction....

 

I'm very happy to work at the Human Resource Section with lovely senior colleagues!!

 

 

Uthai Thani

週末はバンコクから車で3時間位のウタイタニへ。楽しかったといいたいところだけれど・・ある意味忘れられない旅に。ゴージャスツアーではなく子供キャンプなので地元の学校の教室にゴザをひいてザコネ＋水シャワーなので、実は相当チャレンジングでした。自分では身体を適応させてるつもりだったけれどたぶん、内側にストレスが溜まっていたんだと思う。3日目の朝、これまた1年ぶりに大惨事を招く始末。世界遺産になってるウタイタニの森に行ったときのこと、激しい頭痛が起こり、森の中を歩けなくなり、肩を貸してもらって歩いてみたり、おんぶしてもらったり、そして最後には大きな垂れ幕でタンカのように運ばれていきました。あ～、恥ずかしい。本当に友達、子供たちの優しさにホロリ。あたし、相当重かったはずなんだよねー。ほんまにありがとー。でも、トラクターに乗ってゴトゴト田舎道を走ったり、コウモリ（写真）を見にいったり楽しかった。大自然と文明生活の共存はう～ん、難しい。これでもアパートにヤモリ、クモ、アリ、ゴキブリ、何が出てきても大丈夫でタイの生活に適応していると思ってたけど、所詮バンコク止まりだったことが判明。

ってなわけで月曜日は体調不良のため、初めて仕事を休む。火曜日の今日は行く気満々だったのにまたデモの影響でオフィスがお休み。オフィスが休みって聞いて、今日はタイ語の日だったのでタイ語のクラスに行かなくていいことにホッとする私。タイ語は予習、復習をしないと本当について行くのがハードなんです。おかげで今日は大学院宛のレポートを書いたり、部屋を片付けたりゆっくりできてよかった。最近、同じアパートなんだけど部屋を移動したので大家さんに朝からインターネットを新しい部屋でも使いたいとお願いして繋がったのが夕方・・。でも、こういうタイ時間の流れにはさすがに慣れてきた。今日中に繋がってよかったやんーって感じ。明日もオフィスはデモの影響でお休み。さっき、上司からメールが。キャンプに行って、爪の隙間にバイ菌が入って足が腫れてしまってるので明日は病院に行きたいなと。今朝も今晩も、オフィスの先輩からオフィスに来たらダメだよって電話があった。タイ人のみなさま、どこに行っても本当に優しくて親切なんだよね。有難い。

 

I went to Uthai Thani to join a youth camp this weekend, it took 3 hours from Bangkok by car. I want to say that I've enjoyed the trip, but let me tell you a truth. Sleeping on a floor at a school and taking a shower without hot water were very challenging for me as I've never had such kind of experiences. I tried to adjust myself to the new circumstance, but I thought it did not work unfortunately. Disaster stroke when it was least expected on Sunday morning. We went to the Natural World Heritage site, I could not walk suddenly since I had a splitting headache there. My friends helped me to walk together and carry myself on their back and with big banner... To my shame, I bothered them too much. My weight must be very heavy, so I really appreciate their kindness. But I've enjoyed getting on a tractor on a country road and seeing many bats (Photo) in the dark. I think that nature cannot coexist with the civilized world. I was sure that I adjusted myself to a life in Thailand as I could stand insects such as ants, spiders, cockroaches, and house lizards. But I realized that I would survive only a life in Bangkok. 

 

I was on leave as I've had a headache on Monday. I really wanted to go to the office today, but the office was closed due to a demo again. I'm happy to hear that I do not need to attend a Thai class. That class is very hard, so I need to study before the class and review after the class. Instead of working, I wrote reports for my professor and settle down in my room since I just moved to another room at the same apartment. I asked my landlord to set up my internet this morning, but I could access it in the evening. I can stand it even though it took much time, I learned a Thai way. By the way, I cannot work at the office tomorrow as well since the anti government party have hold a demonstration. I want to go to a hospital because my feet hurt during the trip. My colleagues called me to make sure about tomorrow even though I got a message from my supervisor. I can meet nice Thai people anywhere anytime! 

Kanchanaburi

週末はカンチャナブリに行ってきました。主な目的は２つ。１つはカンチャナブリの戦跡を訪ねることと、もう１つは児童養護施設を訪問すること。私は学生時代に日本は原爆の被爆国だってことを習った記憶はあるけれど、こんな風にアジアをはじめ日本軍が卑劣なことをしたと学校で習った記憶はない。カンチャナブリの鉄道建設で亡くなった方の共同墓地とメモリアルミュージアムには鉄道建設の際に日本軍の捕虜となった国籍の友達たちとこの小旅行に参加したので本当に恥ずかしかった。

 

児童養護施設には両親と暮らせない子供たちがたくさん。5歳くらいまでの小さな子供たちはあどけない無邪気な笑顔をたくさん垣間見たけれど、ティーンエージャーの子供たちはどこかしら寂しそうな雰囲気が漂っていて、何度も泣きそうに。簡単に同情なんてしたくないけれど、寂しい時間を積み重ねてきたんだろうなということを考えただけで悲しくて。小さな子供たちが楽しそうに川で拾った棒を使って遊んでいたときに、年上のお姉さんがその棒を取り上げた姿を見て、小さな子供たちも可哀そうだったけれど、年上の彼女のその態度が彼女の今の気持ちを表してるのじゃないのかと思ったり。でも、楽しい出会いもありました。アクティビティを通じて、そこに暮らす男の子とお互いにネームカードを作って交換したんだけれど、彼の絵の上手さに感激。私がこの紙を見ればタイを思い出すものにして欲しいとリクエストしたら、タイのアユタヤ時代の王様と軍人の絵を描いてくれました。顔の表情とか色の選択を見て、なんだかホッとした気持ちに。穏やかな表情だし、色もカラフルで。彼の未来は明るいと思えて、なんだか嬉しかった。

 

I went to Kanchanaburi with my friends this weekend. Purposes of the trip were to visit memorial places for the World War II and an children's orphanage. I remembered that I learned Japan was the victim country of the atomic bombs when I was a student. But I did not learn Japan was the mean country which caused damages to other countries. I was so embarrassed at the memorial museum as a Japanese since I stayed with my friends who were from countries of the victims by the Japanese army and faced the dirty history.

 

And I visited the children's orphanage. I could see it looked like young children was having a great time, however, I tried not to cry many times as I felt teenager's eye looked sad. I do not want to feel bad for them easily, but sympathise with their lonely hearts. There were children who enjoyed playing with pieces of wood in a river. But a senior girl was unkind to take it from them. It is so sad to see the situation for me as I felt she was not happy with her life. On the other hand, I'm happy to meet a boy through an activity. He draw very nice pictures for me since I asked him to draw something related to Thailand. It eased me my mind as the expressions of his drawing were very peaceful and colorful. And I thought he had a good skill in drawing, what do you think? I'm sure that he is the person with a bright future.
